The CAS is saddened to report the passing of John Coffey. As a production sound mixer, John worked on classic TV series from the ‘70s and ‘80s, including Lou Grant, Hart to Hart, Fame, and T.J. Hooker. He also held various sound department roles for films including Ordinary People, Rocky II, and Rocky III. John went on to open Coffey Sound Services in Los Angeles to better serve and support the sound community. After years of success, Coffey Sound was acquired by Trew Audio in 2011. Glen Trew shares, “It was during this time that I developed an immense amount of admiration and respect for John as a tireless business operator who accomplished great things through his persistence, and as a person who valued family and friends above all else.” John served on the Board of Directors of the Cinema Audio Society for a number of years, including multiple terms as Vice President. CAS Board member and former president Richard Lightstone CAS shares, “John’s support of the sound community was enormous, even giving the CAS a place to hold its monthly board meetings. But what John will be remembered for most was his encouragement to all sound professionals – offering advice, friendship, mentorship, generosity, and lots of encouragement. John was a fighter, not only for this industry, but for his family as well, especially his daughter. John Coffey will be greatly missed.” The CAS thanks John for his dedication to our industry and service to the CAS. We extend our condolences to his family and friends.
