Jeffrey S. Wexler Award

for Advancement in Sound Technology

The Jeffrey S. Wexler Award honors individuals, companies and products that have had a profound impact on the art and craft of sound mixing. This award may recognize advancements that either extensively improved on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they materially changed how sound is recorded, mixed or delivered. The award may be given to a specific technology, individual or product, or to multiple technologies, individuals or products honoring a wider category of contribution.

The CAS Science Technology and Engineering Committee will review and evaluate all submissions to determine which submissions will be awarded. Applications may be submitted by committee members, CAS members, product manufacturers, and individual inventors.

After reviewing the form and any ancillary materials, the committee may request additional information or presentation.

Timeline

CAS Engineering and Technology Awards Timeline

  • May 1–June 30: Application submissions period. SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
  • July 1–August 31: Committee review and research window
  • September 15: Award decisions are communicated to recipients
  • September 15–September 30: Errors and omission requests are accepted by the committee
  • October 15: Recipients are announced
  • Awards will be presented at the next year’s CAS Awards.

Jeffrey S. Wexler CAS

Wexler was among the first to use digital audio tape (DAT) and was at the forefront of file-based production recorders, which ushered in the next major technical transition in motion picture sound recording and the way virtually all sound is recorded today. 

This award is named in honor of the late Jeffrey S. Wexler CAS, the revered production mixer, leader, educator, and consummate sound professional whose career exemplified both technical excellence and forward-looking innovation. He passed away on December 9, 2025. His career spanned more than forty years and included an impressive resume of more than 70 feature films, hundreds of commercials and numerous documentaries. Wexler was honored with a BAFTA Film Award for Best Sound for Almost Famous and was a two-time Academy Award® nominee, as well as an Emmy® and CAS Award nominee for his work on The Last Samurai, Independence Day and the HBO film 61. In 2011, he was the recipient of the CAS Career Achievement Award.
