The Sounding Board v5.0 was a co-produced event between CAS and MPSE on November 2nd 2025 from 9am-7:30pm PT at Loyola Marymount University, Westchester Campus, Los Angeles, CA. A day of in-person discussions about the practical, creative, and technical art of sound for picture, and the new Hands On Lab: Wiring and Clean Up.
Following breakfast CAS Executive Officer Lindsey Alvarez CAS and MPSE President David Barber MPSE opened the day thanking Professor Roy Finch and the School of Film and Television for their work with Dean Moore, and their partnership in helping the event to grow and find a new home at Loyola Marymount University.
They concluded their remarks with the presentation of a check to Bernard Weiser MPSE, President of EIPMA.
The Entertainment Industry Professionals Mentoring Alliance, an organization close to the hearts of both the CAS and MPSE organizations. Established after the passing of industry veteran Paul Rodriguez who gave his time and experience so generously to those wanting to learn. EIPMA’s mission, to give career guidance for individuals seeking craft and technical careers in the entertainment industry, is aligned with that of both the MPSE and the CAS.
Weiser, responded that as founding organizations CAS & MPSE have been instrumental in the growth and continued service of EIPMA and the Check for $4150, would enable many of the upcoming years endeavors.

Paul Massey is an English Re-Recording Dialogue and Music Mixer based in Southern California. He started his career recording and mixing music, both in studios and live while touring with bands including Yes, The Police, and Supertramp.
He has been nominated for eleven Academy Awards in the category Best Sound and has worked on 250-plus films since 1982. He won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2019 for Bohemian Rhapsody and in 2022 he received the Cinema Audio Society’s Career Achievement Award at the 58th annual CAS Awards.
He has also won four BAFTA Awards with a total of ten nominations, plus seven CAS Awards with a total of twelve nominations.

Fei Yu is an award-winning music producer, supervisor, recording engineer and music editor for film and video games, known for her unique ability to navigate the inherent challenges that come with international creative collaboration. Yu’s work has garnered high praise from elite industry professionals in both China and the U.S., and she regularly works with some of the world’s most esteemed composers and artists including Andrea Bocelli, Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe, Tyler Bates, Rupert Gregson-Williams ,etc.
A graduate of Beijing Film Academy in her native China, Yu was recruited by China Film Group Corporation where she spent three years working as a recording engineer. She later received her master’s degree from the internationally-renowned program in Sound Recording at Canada’s McGill University, where she became the first Chinese graduate. While at McGill she won two gold awards from the student recording competition of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), an international society devoted exclusively to audio technology. She was the first woman and the first Asian to become a two-time gold award recipient. Her recent accolades include the 68th Golden Reel Award for Best Foreign Language Film and 34th Golden Rooster Award nomination for Best Music, among others.
Yu is the founder and CEO of Dream Studios, which provides comprehensive, tailor-made music services for film, television, and video games. Her goal is to bring the talent and expertise of Western composers and artists to the emerging Chinese film market.

Chris Welcker CAS is an Emmy award winning production sound mixer with roots in New Orleans and a background in jazz performance. After working in commercial scoring, he transitioned into film and television, rising through the ranks under the mentorship of Oscar winner Kirk Francis. His credits include Keanu, Rebel Ridge, The Dirt, Bill & Ted Face the Music, and Daisy Jones & the Six, which earned him both an Emmy Award and a Cinema Audio Society Awards nomination.
Recent projects include the IMAX 70mm feature Sinners and the musical comedy sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, where his music-focused approach and collaborative mindset have helped shape the sound of each production. Chris continues to pursue work that blends musicality with the craft of cinematic storytelling.

Amanda Beggs CAS has been working as a production sound mixer in Los Angeles for almost 20 years and works on both features and television. She’s been honored with two CAS Award nominations and two Emmy nominations. She is currently the Vice President of the Cinema Audio Society, an executive board member of IATSE Local 695, and a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the TV Academy. Most recent projects include the movie Him, currently in theatres, and Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water.
Following up from “Say What?” dialogue intelligibility panel from last year’s Sounding Board event, we discuss if the dialogue intelligibility landscape has changed substantially over the last 12 months. There are new tools to help us measure subjective dialogue intelligibility, upcoming changes to the broadcast loudness specifications, government regulation and laws, and overall changes in the way that some content creators are having content mixed and delivered. In addition, this panel also provides a detailed primer on the CALM spec, A85 and all other things relating to loudness and dialog level measurements.

Jeffrey is also a Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE) and has published extensively in AES, SMPTE, IEEE, NCTA, and NAB, and is inventor/co-inventor on more than 50 patent families in the areas of multimedia signal processing, loudness measurement and control, multisource (network) coding of media, and related media systems.

Having been at DTS, Sony, Digital Sound and Picture, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Widget Post, Iosono, Wildfire , Todd-AO, and Deluxe Media, Brian is now Director of Technical Operations for The Glen Glenn Film Center.

Based in Southern California, Ken Cain has spent two decades shaping sound for film, television, and advertising. Since moving to L.A. in 2002, he has worked across nearly every aspect of post-production sound—from Dialogue / ADR to sound effects, Foley, and mixing—earning an Emmy in 2024 for his Foley editing on Shōgun. His credits include The Walking Dead, Invasion, and Tour de Pharmacy, with collaborations spanning Warner Bros., Universal, and beyond. A co-founder of Sound Brigade, Ken also produces commercial sound effects libraries that blend his love for field recording, experimentation, and creative sound design.

He has worked in storytelling since his first job at the age of 14, running sound and lights for a theater in his hometown in Ohio. With a drive for seeking out elegant solutions under ever-changing constraints, he worked in live sound reinforcement and recorded bands through college. He was then presented with a new challenge and offered an opportunity to enter the realm of sound for picture in Los Angeles. Bryan has worked in both broadcast and features, coming up at first through the fast-paced world of nonfiction television and then on to more creative film projects. For over 15 years he has customized his approach and workflow to each project’s unique needs. He is especially interested in the musicality and nuance of human speech, in the expressive power of different vehicle engines and in the way background sounds shape emotion and steer expectation.

Beyond Sony’s labels (Columbia, TriStar, Screen Gems, and Sony Pictures Animation), he works on projects for Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount, and Disney.
Prior to Sony, Justin advanced Dolby Atmos adoption at Dolby Laboratories, refining processes that set new standards in cinematic and streaming audio. He has been instrumental in developing Sony’s 360 Virtual Mixing Environment (VME), a breakthrough technology offering flexible, immersive audio workflows.
Justin’s passion lies in enabling filmmakers to realize their creative visions seamlessly—from concept to delivery. By creating trustworthy mix stages and minimizing technical barriers, he ensures storytellers can focus on their craft while maintaining their original creative intent.

A media technologist and consultant specializing in film and television production, postproduction and distribution. He has managed industry transitions at the nexus of creative experimentation, technological advancement and business transformation for Technicolor, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Netflix.
While at Technicolor, Jimmy facilitated the transition from film to digital image acquisition. At Sony, he oversaw the design and execution of 4K picture post-production workflows, and supported the maiden voyages of new professional technologies. At Netflix, Jimmy led the Creative Technologies team responsible for advancing the development and adoption of production sound and imaging tools, standards, and techniques, such as Dolby Vision and Atmos. Jimmy also oversaw the engineering of the studio’s global screening, premiere and production lab systems, notably collaborating with Sony and Meyer Sound to develop the Ultra Reflex system.
