About the Sounding Board

Our 2025 Sounding Board v5.0 saw over 200 Industry professionals joining us at LMU, School of Film & Television for
a day of in-person discussions about the practical, creative, & technical art of sound for picture. SB v6.0 is taking place at Loyola Marymount University on November 15th, 2026. We will start the day at 9am with registration and a light breakfast followed by brief Presidential remarks. Lunch will be provided along with refreshments at the end of day mixer.

Who makes up the Production Sound Team that deliver production dialog tracks to the editors and mixers who end up taking all that hard work and use it as one of the crucial fundamental building blocks of a soundtrack? What are the some of the most common issues found on set? What do the utility, boom operators and other members of the production sound crew do?
 

Everything Old is New Again

Restoring and remixing legacy media for today's audience. How do you take a mono, stereo, or 5.1 soundtrack and remix it for immersive formats?

Post Basics for Production

Pulling back the curtain for those who live on the other side. Who makes up the Post sound team that receive materials from Production. What are the steps taken to get those recording onto the screen and out of the speakers? What are the unique challenges that the sound editing team face when crafting and preparing those tracks for the eventual mix? What happens once it gets to the mixing stage and how are they shaped into the final mix? How are subjective notes turned into realized and focused ideas that make up the completed soundtrack?

Why I Did That

A mini version of our typical screenings where we show a 5 minutes/scene/segment of a film or title of interest and then have a panel with as many members of the sound team as possible to discuss it, starting with production and post production mixers; dialogue editor; foley mixer, editor, and artist; and sound supervisor.

Hands On Lab

This lab hosts hands on sessions to see, touch and understand specific techniques and processes in todays audio.

Foley Live

Foley has evolved extensively since it first appeared almost 100 years ago alongside the advent of synchronized soundtracks. The complexity of foley recording and performance have allowed foley to become one of the essential elements of the final soundtrack that seamlessly blend with sound effects and creative sound design. This session panel will discuss the rolls of the foley artist and mixers and how it has become a complex and extreme crucial part of a soundtrack. Performance techniques, use of props and recording tips and tricks all be part of this exciting and interactive live foley demonstration.

Exoskeletons

Demonstration of devices to reduce the physical strain of boom operating, both separately or while mixing as a One-Man-Band. What are the possible limitations of movement? What are the health benefits for long takes? And much more!

Software for Field Recording

A discussion and demonstration of various software packages to record production sound without a dedicated hardware recorder. Pro and cons: cost, reliability etc…
